Team SW: Bound for glory?
Shepherd and Wedderburn is hoping to match the skill and expertise that its lawyers deploy on behalf of the country’s top companies with equal flair and dexterity when its football team competes in Business Fives, Scotland’s first national business five-a-side tournament.
Eight industry sector heats are taking place over the next month at the Sighthill Powerleague in Edinburgh and the Shepherd and Wedderburn team is hoping that its first game in the Professional Services heat on Thursday 11th August will be the start of its journey to the final at Hampden on 1st September.
When asked about their chances of clinching the tournament trophy, team captain, Thomas McFarlane, of the firm’s commercial litigation practice, said, “I’ve heard that the standard of football in the games already played has been very high, so we will do well to progress to the next round.
“Most of the guys in the team are not new to the blood and thunder of Scottish five-a-sides, and we all have experience of playing for a variety of teams. Joe The Goal Machine Fitzgibbon, from our media and technology practice, a key player, will be absent from our line-up on Thursday because of client commitments. Despite that, we are ready for this tournament. Confidence is high following a comprehensive victory over KPMG in a ‘friendly’ match last week, and we are not ruling out our chances of bringing back some silverware. ”
Finalists from the other sector heats who are already through to the grand final include Santander and Nucleus Financial, Maclay Murray & Spens LLP and DJ Alexander and Keepmoat .
Hearts and Hibs ‘legends’ Gary MacKay and Pat Stanton will be compering the prize giving at Thursday’s heat, which will be followed by networking drinks and a Q & A session. Proceeds from entry fees collected by Business Fives will be donated to The Trussell Trust, a charity which runs the country’s largest network of UK foodbanks.
