JumpInSwimChallengeJanuary is the month when thousands of Scots resolve that this is the year they will get fit, lose weight or just get out more. Unfortunately, New Year’s resolutions are as notorious as Hollywood marriages as far as lasting commitment goes.

So why not challenge yourself in 2018 and set a goal of raising money for a good cause you care about. It could be the ultimate motivator and not only help you keep up your fitness goals but it will help others too.

With this in mind, Edinburgh Leisure, the not-for-profit company which manages 30 venues across the capital, is launching their January promotion in the hope they will inspire people to join one of their leisure centres across the city and receive support to work towards their health and fitness goals.

New members joining between 21 December 2017 and 31 January 2018, will get February free.* Edinburgh Leisure is also running a ‘refer a friend’ offer for existing members. If a member refers a friend and they sign up during the promotional period, the member will get £30 cash back (£20 cash back in they are members of Jack Kane, Queensferry or Kirkliston).

With 1 world class climbing centre, 6 golf courses, 10 swimming pools, 14 state of the art gyms and 800+ fitness classes per week across the various centres, Edinburgh Leisure really is the biggest club in town. There is something for everyone to enjoy moving and getting fitter.

David McLean, Fitness Manager at Edinburgh Leisure said: “Why not make 2018 the year you and a friend challenge yourselves to take part in a charity event for that extra motivation. Having a goal outside of weight loss can help to give exercise an added dimension with losing weight a secondary benefit. Training with a friend can be fun, motivating, social and you’ll drive each other to achieve.

“There are lots of great causes out there to choose from, which will offer a range of fitness challenges, such as the Edinburgh Leisure Jump In Swim Challenge and our welcoming Edinburgh Leisure staff will be on hand to offer new members support and advice to help you enjoy increased physical activity in the long term and work out a programme that’s achievable for your chosen event.”

Paraclimber, Keith Lynch helps launch Paraclimbing Cup at EICA Ratho Finalcrux-9A come and try session for para-climbers is being held at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena on Thursday, 7 December 2017 from 7-9pm.

Organised by Climb Scotland and the EICA, this will be the first get together for the Scottish Paraclimbing Club, who will be running the ‘Come and Try Paraclimbing’ session.

During the session, qualified staff will be on hand with access to specialist equipment to enable anyone with a disability to have a go and hopefully to get involved in this sport long-term.

The ambition for the club is to have weekly climb meets, club trips to various indoor venues, coaching sessions, outdoor climbing trips and training opportunities for members and volunteers.

Victoria McWhannell, Events Manager at Ratho said: “After the really successful Paraclimbing Cup that was held in September, alongside the IFSC World Cup, we have seen an appetite for sessions that might encourage people with disabilities to get into this sport.

“At the September event, out of the 204 competitors there were 42 men and 17 women that participated within the Paraclimbing Cup, which far exceeded our expectations. These competitors, despite their different disabilities which included visual impairments, amputations and health conditions, had different stories to tell and a common love of climbing. They were truly inspirational to everyone watching.”

Places are subject to availability and booking is advisable. Call 0131 333 6305 or email: bookings.eica@edinburghleisure.co.uk to book.

Seven years after the IFSC Youth World Championships in Edinburgh, top sport climbing athletes return to the capital city of Scotland for IFSC World Cup Edinburgh, the fifth Lead and Speed event of 2017.

The event will take place on September 23-24 alongside the second Paraclimbing Cup of the season. Edinburgh has consistently hosted top-notch events for rising youth stars since 2009. Young athletes from all over the world competed in Edinburgh in 2010 at the annual IFSC Youth World Championships. Now, many of those same athletes return to Scotland for IFSC World Cup Edinburgh. Altogether, 131 Lead and Speed athletes and 63 paraclimbing athletes have registered to compete at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena this weekend.

Lead rivalries continue
Veteran athlete Jakob Schubert of Austria was unstoppable in his first IFSC Lead World Cup of the season last month, besting a strong field in Arco that included Alexander Megos, Adam Ondra, and season leader Romain Desgranges of France. Desgranges is the only man so far to win two of these events in 2017. 2010 finalists Marcello Bombardi, David Firnenburg, Stefano Ghisolfi, Masahiro Higuchi, Domen Skofic and Loic Timmermans all return to the world stage in Edinburgh with seven more years of experience at the highest level. Also follow Great Britain’s own William Bosi and James Pope, two standouts at IFSC Youth World Championships Innsbruck.

For the women, the rivalry between Slovenian Janja Garnbret, Jain Kim of Korea and Anak Verhoeven of Belgium continues this weekend. Kim ended Garnbret’s streak of victories at three in Arco, adding a 26th IFSC Lead World Cup victory to her scorecard. Verhoeven joins 2010 finalists Julia Chanourdie, Katherine Choong, Dinara Fakhritdinova and Magdalena Rock in returning to Edinburgh. From Great Britain, keep an eye on Arco finalist Molly Thompson-Smith and 17-year-old Hannah Slaney. Ashima Shiraishi, crowned Lead youth champion for the third time at Innsbruck, is also on the start list.

Speed stars duel for Gold
Four athletes have guarded the top of IFSC Speed World Cup podiums so far: Reza Alipoushenazandifar and Vladislav Deulin for the men, and Anouck Jaubert and Iuliia Kaplina for the women. Jaubert gained ground in the Speed rankings with a victory in Arco, and frontrunner Kaplina leads a strong Russian team that has won no less than 15 medals this season. Her teammate Mariia Krasavina claimed three of them. Klaudia Buczek of Poland, youth champion in 2010, will aim for another gold medal in Edinburgh. Like Kaplina, Deulin has yet to miss a podium in 2017, and the Russian speedster returned to the top of the rankings in Arco. His teammate Stanislav Kokorin will also be in Edinburgh, as well as 2010 finalists Marcin Dzienski and Leonardo Gontero. Also keep an eye on Gontero’s Italian compatriot Ludovico Fossali, who registered the fastest time in Arco (5.81 seconds). Tune-in on September 24 to watch the action LIVE: www.ifsc-climbing.org

Paraclimbing Cup
After inspiring fans of IFSC World Championships Paris last year with unparalleled perseverance, the best paraclimbing athletes in the world have continued to impress this year. The second Paraclimbing Cup of 2017 will also take place in Edinburgh this weekend. Leg amputee Urko Carmona Barandiaran of Spain rebounded after an early fall in Paris kept him out of finals, topping every problem at the first Paraclimbing Cup of the season in Briancon. Paris medallists Mathieu Besnard, Nils Helsper and Melinda Vigh won gold medals in Briancon in the RP categories (limited range, power or stability), as well as visually impaired athletes Francisco Javier Aguilar Amoedo and Roxane Heili, forearm amputee Kevin Bartke and Serge Laurencin in RP2. Also track the climbing of world champion Elodie Orbaen in RP3.

Glenogle poolOne of Edinburgh Leisure’s six Victorian pools, Glenogle in Stockbridge, is to reopen on Monday, 11 September, having undergone a major £200k refurbishment to replace the poolside tiling to maintain the longevity of the pool and improve the customer experience.

Sauna and steam room facilities are currently not available but new facilities will open within the next month.

Wendy Avinou, Manager at Glenogle, said: “Whilst the work has taken longer than expected to complete, we are grateful to our Edinburgh Leisure customers for their patience whilst the refurbishment took place and hope they have enjoyed the opportunity to try out other Edinburgh Leisure facilities across the city in the meantime.

“We are looking forward to welcoming old and new customers back, including the casual swimmers and indeed those looking for coaching options. If you are interested in finding out more about our adult or children’s coaching options, pay us a visit or look online.”

With over 20 years’ experience in helping the people of Edinburgh learn to swim, our swim teams are led by highly qualified Level 2 teachers who are continually up-skilled, developed and monitored by a team of professionals. Edinburgh Leisure offer classes for all ages from birth to adults, including lessons for children with additional support needs in a choice of centres.

In the heart of the city centre, between Cannonmills and Stockbridge, Glenogle Swim Centre is something of a rare breed, a hark back to Victorian baths but with a modern twist. ‘Glennies’ boasts a restored Victorian swimming pool and a gym with state of the art equipment and free-weights room and fitness studio.

In addition to the recent pool refurbishment, Glenogle gym and studio underwent a £55k facelift in the winter of 2015, with new equipment being installed and the studio given a refresh.

Hosts to the IFSC World Cup and Paraclimbing Cup, which will take place from 23-24 September at Edinburgh’s International Climbing Arena at Ratho, are reporting huge demand for tickets.

Tickets for Sunday’s finals and weekend tickets are now sold out but there are still a limited number of tickets for Saturday’s qualifications rounds. Spectators are encouraged to buy the remaining tickets now to see some of the best climbers and paraclimbers in the world compete.

Over the weekend over 77 climbers are already registered to compete across all categories – Lead and Speed, with climbers from Austria, Italy and Slovenia still to enter their teams; all strong nations in both categories. In the Paraclimbing Cup, registration is now closed with 63 climbers taking part in one of 9 climbing categories. Thirteen climbers are from the UK including Scotsman, Keith Lynch.

Sport climbing will make its debut at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 after being approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of a package of five sports, all selected for their key focus on youth, which is at the heart of the Games’ vision for Tokyo 2020.

Lindsay Renwick, Head of Customer Operations at Edinburgh Leisure said: “We’re delighted with response to ticket sales for the Climbing World Cup at Ratho, where you’ll be able to witness the world’s best climbers and paraclimbers.
There’s obviously some keen interest ahead of sport climbing debuting at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 so if you don’t want to miss out on the action, we encourage you to snap up the last tickets for Saturday’s qualifiers.”

Stuart Turner, Head of EventScotland, said: “We’re delighted tickets have sold out for Sunday for this month’s IFSC World Cup and Paraclimbing World Cup with only a limited number left for Saturday’s session. This is an exciting time for the sport and Ratho is the perfect stage for people to see climbing first-hand ahead of its debut at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

“The combination of both world-class facilities and climbers promises an adrenaline packed weekend of action so I recommend you get in now if you want to secure one of the final tickets still available.”

Organised by EICA:Ratho, in conjunction with the British Mountaineering Council, and with support from Edinburgh Leisure, City of Edinburgh Council and EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate, this is the first time the IFSC World Cup has been held in Edinburgh since 2003 and the first time a Paraclimbing Cup has been held in Scotland.

EdinburghLeisureJumpIn10x10SwimChallengeTen staff from Edinburgh Leisure jumped in to help raise money to fund essential swimming lessons for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Edinburgh.

The staff took part in Edinburgh Leisure’s first ever major fundraising ’10 x 10 Swim Challenge’, which involved a team of 10 staff, swimming 1km each in 10 of Edinburgh Leisure’s pools in one day on 1 September. All sponsorship raised will help to continue to fund the ‘Jump In’ project, which gives pre-school swimming lessons for nursery pupils living in areas of multiple deprivation in the city.

The team were supported by Landmarc Support who supplied transport and refreshments for the team. Landmarc’s Regional Operations Manager for Scotland, Kevin Kneeshaw said: “Jump In is a great initiative so we’re really pleased we could be involved by transporting the swimmers between each of the ten locations. We hope this challenge has helped to raise awareness of this vital project to support essential swimming lessons for disadvantaged children.”

Andrew Stephenson, Funding Officer at Edinburgh Leisure explained: “Since the ‘Jump In’ project started in 2012, it has taught 1,500 nursery school children affected by poverty to swim, embedding crucial life skills that keeps children safe around water by improving their water confidence and swimming ability.

“All the team taking part have got involved because they believe every child should have the chance to swim, but sadly not everyone gets that opportunity. As a charity, Edinburgh Leisure relies on funding from trusts, companies and individuals to keep this project going.”

This is the first ever major fundraising challenge that Edinburgh Leisure has initiated. Projects like Jump In are part of Edinburgh Leisure’s Active Communities programme that give a helping hand to those that need a little extra support to get active and protect their health and wellbeing.

Swimming can have a really positive effect on an individual’s mental wellbeing, with additional wider social benefits including better educational attainment and improved confidence.

Yet despite these great benefits, 40% of Scotland’s children leave primary school unable to swim. This number increases significantly in areas of deprivation, which is poignant when more than one child in every five living in Edinburgh is affected by poverty.

This social injustice means that these children are often excluded from learning to swim, placing them at a higher risk of drowning and losing out on the chance to develop their physical abilities and communication skills that their peers can learn during swimming lessons.

The decline in children’s swimming ability is linked to an eight percent decline in the number of people swimming recreationally (Sports England), especially families. As well as the negative impact on a child’s ability to swim and their water confidence, children who never get the opportunity to learn to swim are less likely to be physically active throughout their life, increasing their likelihood of major illnesses by up to 50% and early death by up to 30%.

If you have had a great experience of swimming and believe that all children should get the opportunity to learn to swim and would like to sponsor the team, donations can be made by texting EDLS65 £3 to 70070.
