QMU to Create New Business and Religious Education Teachers for Secondary Schools

Posted: 28th November 2022

Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh is launching two new one-year courses which will help graduates qualify to become teachers of business education or religious, moral and philosophical studies in Scotland’s secondary schools.

The PGDE Secondary (Business Education) and PGDE Secondary (Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies) are two separate one-year postgraduate programmes which will prepare graduates to teach either subject in Scottish secondary schools and beyond and provides them with an internationally recognised secondary teaching qualification.

The move builds on the highly successful portfolio of teaching courses that Queen Margaret University has offered in recent years – including a four-year primary teaching degree and a postgraduate course in home economics.

The University is now accepting applicants for both courses, which will attract graduates who already have a degree in a related subject area and who want to teach young people. These new PDGE routes will suit graduates who have a passion for the subject of business education or religious, moral and philosophical studies but who are interested in linking this to social justice, sustainability and health and wellbeing agenda.

Sir Paul Grice, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen Margaret University, said: “Our initial teacher education courses, including these two new PGDEs, take a fresh and vibrant approach to learning to teach in Scotland. Our strong focus on social justice allows us to attract and educate people who want to make a real difference to the world around them. What better way to do that than to educate and inspire our future generation of young people – supporting them to develop as engaged global citizens who can make a positive contribution to shaping our communities and the health of our nation or by helping to shape businesses and organisations to contribute to the sustainability of communities, our country and the wider world.”

The first intake of graduates will start their courses in August 2023.
