Knocking down stereotypes and building up a business

Posted: 2nd September 2019

The 30-year-old Edinburgh entrepreneur who’s changing the face of the construction industry

It’s fair to say Iain Martin took a huge gamble when he decided to launch his own building contractor business last year. His father, a joiner, had warned him not to enter the construction industry in the first place; stereotypes of ‘unreliable’ tradesmen seemed to be accepted as the norm, and he would be competing against countless well-established companies for tenders.

However, despite being in business for less than a year, it’s clear the gamble is paying off. Revere Contracts has already won a series of prestigious contracts for a number of high-end developments – from the Taipei Consulate to a large student accommodation complex in the heart of the Scottish capital. And the company is winning covetable awards too. The reason? Because Managing Director Iain is determined to do things differently.

With a degree in Engineering and experience as a Project Manager under his belt, Iain saw first-hand the mistakes that were all too common in the construction industry. So he drew up a business plan and set out to single-handedly revolutionise the sector. Within a few short months, Revere Contracts was up and running. Like many start-ups, the business began life as a single-man operation in Iain’s home, but fast-forward just one year and Iain has already built Revere Contracts into a core team of 10 staff, based in two Edinburgh New Town offices, plus 50 operational trade-staff.

The secret to his success he puts down to one clear mission statement; ‘Pay strict attention to clients’ needs, costings and procedures, and ensure no client is ever let down’ says Iain. In fact, he describes himself as being ‘Absolutely scrupulous about our quality of work, our trustworthiness and our integrity’.

It was for this reason that Iain took inspiration from the creative industries and made the unprecedented step of assigning each client a dedicated Account Manager so they could be kept involved and informed every step of the way. This focus on providing an exceptional customer experience, and a commitment to ensuring all projects are completed on time and to budget, is making Revere Contracts stand out from the competition for all the right reasons.

And Iain’s determination to do things differently doesn’t stop there. Iain is passionate about up-skilling his staff and investing in their future, so personal and professional development is at the heart of each team member’s career path at Revere Contracts.

Furthermore, it’s not just the future of Revere Contracts that Iain is keen to invest in. Iain is a firm believer in giving back, so Revere Contracts is set to introduce an initiative that will soon see staff donate some of their time to helping worthy community projects.

With Iain’s integrity, commitment and determination to change people’s perceptions of the construction industry, it’s clear he has created a solid foundation upon which he is sure to build a bright future with Revere Contracts.
