Neither camp really knows to what extent, and when, breakthroughs in machine-learning will become firmly embedded in the financial services industry.  The fundamental question is: will these programs complement what we do, or replace us?

Dentons is delighted to invite you to the next instalment in our Digital Threat series of Horizon Brief events and the second to be held in Scotland, hosted by the University of Edinburgh. Please join us for a panel discussion with the following key speakers:

  • Birgitte Andersen, CEO and Co-Creator of the Big Innovation Centre, a London-based investment hub. A Professor at Birkbeck College, University of London, she is an expert in business innovation, productivity and intellectual property, including policy proposals to enhance economic growth.
  • Søren F. Mortensen, Director of Global Financial Markets at IBM. His responsibilities include innovation in financial markets, covering developments in cognitive and blockchain technology. Having worked at leading banks, he has a practitioner’s view of the challenges.
  • Emanuela (Emma) Vartolomei, Founder and CEO of All Street, which is dedicated to democratising access to investment via crowdfunding and shared knowledge. An economist with an MBA from Oxford University, Emma’s financial services experience spans corporate banking and asset management.
  • Yorick Wilks, Emeritus Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sheffield, a visiting professor at Gresham College and a senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute. He is one of the fathers of natural language computing and the developer of “preference semantics”.
  • Dr Taylor Spears, Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, responsible for contributing to the development of the EFI’s research and educational programmes in the areas of FinTech and financial innovation.

The discussion will be moderated by Andrew Hilton, director and joint founder of the CSFI. Dr Hilton is a former World Bank economist and editor-in-chief of the International Reports group in New York. He has a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from the Wharton School and an MA from New College, Oxford.
