Employing staff with (criminal) conviction: Hiring and firing ex-offenders

Only 17% of ex-offenders get a job within 1 year of leaving prison whereas two-third of companies employing ex-offenders would recommend others to do the same.

Can an employer take into account a candidate’s criminal record and can they refuse to offer employment? Does an existing employee have a duty to disclose a new conviction or if an employer discovers this, can they dismiss him or her?
