Dentons launches combination with leading firm in Uruguay

Posted: 22nd September 2020

Dentons is now the largest global law firm in Uruguay and the first truly Pan-Latin American and the Caribbean firm in the history of the legal profession

Dentons has completed the first virtual launch of a traditional law firm combination or merger in the history of the legal profession, combining with Jiménez de Aréchaga, Viana & Brause in Uruguay. The combination positions Dentons as the largest global law firm in Uruguay and, with more offices in all of Latin America and the Caribbean than any other law firm in the world, Dentons is the first truly Pan-Latin American and the Caribbean firm in the history of the legal profession.

“Dentons’ desire to expand its presence in Latin America and the Caribbean is client-driven,” said Elliott Portnoy, Global CEO of Dentons. “The Uruguay market is a priority for our clients, and with our launch today we can now connect clients to leading talent in Uruguay as well to 10,500+ lawyers in 183 locations and 75 countries around the globe.”

“Dentons is the first truly Pan-Latin American and Caribbean firm,” said Joe Andrew, Global Chair of Dentons. “Our polycentric strategy has seen the firm attract leading combination partners like Jiménez de Aréchaga, Viana & Brause, allowing Dentons to scale its presence to 24 countries across the region – a true powerhouse”.

“Since entering Latin America and the Caribbean in 2016, Dentons has rapidly scaled its presence by combining with market-leading firms across the region,” said Jorge Alers, CEO of Dentons’ Latin America and the Caribbean Region. “Our launch in Uruguay further strengthens the position for Dentons to become the leading global law firm in the region.”

Jiménez de Aréchaga, Viana & Brause is recognized as a leader in the areas of Banking and Finance, Corporate and M&A, Energy, Infrastructure, Labor Law, Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Natural Resources, and Real Estate. The new name of the firm in Uruguay is Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga.

“The launch of Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga in Uruguay today means that we can now connect our clients to Dentons’ global platform and offer them an agile, seamless ‘one firm’ experience across Latin America and the Caribbean and around the world,” said Fernando Jiménez de Aréchaga, Managing Partner of Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga.

Since entering Latin America and the Caribbean in 2016, Dentons has become the fastest growing law firm in the region. Dentons’ combinations in:

Antigua and Barbuda
Barbados
Brazil
The Cayman Islands
Chile
Colombia
Costa Rica
Dominica
El Salvador
Guatemala
Guyana
Honduras
Jamaica
Mexico
Nicaragua
Panama
Peru
St. Lucia
St. Kitts and Nevis
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Trinidad and Tobago
Venezuela

have helped to establish Dentons as the only Pan-Latin American and the Caribbean law firm, and today’s launch in Uruguay further strengthens the position for Dentons to become the leading global law firm in the region.

Dentons’ partners approved more whole firm combinations in 2019 than any other law firm. So far in 2020, Dentons has launched Dentons Bingham Greenebaum and Dentons Cohen & Grigsby, the first step in forming a truly national law firm in the United States as part of Dentons’ “Project Golden Spike,” Dentons Kensington Swan in New Zealand and Dentons Lee in South Korea and opened an office in St. Lucia.
