A growing recruitment consultancy has firmly placed its roots in Edinburgh by moving into a dedicated office space in the city.

ORB Recruitment, which has its headquarters in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, expanded into Scotland earlier this year in a move headed up by Edinburgh-based Alan Wallace who became part of ORB’s senior management team

The team of three has moved into the prestigious Pure Office development in Edinburgh Park. The 300 sqft smart space offers room to expand and provides a high standard workplace for the team to meet, relax and work in an ideal local next to important transport links.

Alan said: “We opened up our Scotland presence earlier this year but due to Covid pandemic we were not in position to get a new office until now. We are delighted to be moving into our new suite at Pure Offices which has a perfect location for our needs with excellent transport links and a really strong and established business community already within the development.

“Things have gone really well for us on the past six months and we have been working on some exciting new projects focused on permanent and contract hire recruitment across key development sectors in engineering, construction, food and drink, supply chain, and community-based health care services. Our aim is to develop tailored and bespoke recruitment solutions for talent attraction for businesses throughout Scotland and we are always looking forward to the next challenge. Getting this office space means we can now look ahead to growing our business here and really making our mark on the recruitment sector here.

“I am currently joined by recruitment consultant Chantelle Darkings who will split her time between the Doncaster and Edinburgh offices, as will our managing director Stewart Olsen, but we have also very recently appointed another full time senior team member. It’s a really exciting time for ORB and I’m thrilled to be part of it.”

ORB Recruitment has grown substantially since setting up in Doncaster in 2018, and aims to be the biggest recruitment consultancy in Yorkshire as well as developing its presence UK wide starting with this brand new office in Scotland.

Stewart Olsen, managing director of ORB, said: “We have strong growth plans in place to quickly establish the ORB name across the Scottish market place, and opening a dedicated office with a dedicated team is just the start. It gives us the scope to increase the size of our team in the future and build our work capacity.

“Edinburgh is an excellent geographical location to set up our Scottish operations, it’s the Scottish capital, and has progressed to be a vibrant hub that has an excellent ecosystem of technology SMEs and organisations that require a high demand for quality candidates.”

ORB, which has continued to be busy over recent months, supplying key workers into the healthcare sector throughout the coronavirus pandemic, as well as working with the manufacturing and production, construction and engineering industries, is a specialist, dedicated recruitment consultancy offering outstanding service and effective solutions to clients across the UK.

Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce has thrown its weight behind an ambitious £40million project to create Scotland’s biggest and best-located renewable energy hub in Leith.

And they have called on politicians to back and progress the proposal from Forth Ports, which will help create thousands of new, skilled, green jobs as well as being essential to the progress of Scotland’s offshore wind sector.

Liz McAreavey, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Chamber, said today:

“The Scottish Government wants our country to be net zero carbon by 2045 and Edinburgh has an even more ambitious target of 2030. This target means that in under 10 years, the daily operation and life of our capital city should have no detrimental impact on our environment.

“However, there is a real balance that requires to be struck. Can we achieve the vital reduction in emissions needed to protect the planet and ensure a healthy economic recovery that safeguards the future wellbeing of people? An emissions reduction based on shrinking economic activity will not provide the future we need.

“A model that protects critical productive centres essential to our country, such as the area of the Firth of Forth, while at the same time tackling climate change through immersion in cleaner technologies must be the logical direction of travel.

“And that is why Edinburgh Chamber unequivocally supports the plans put forward by Forth Ports to create Leith Renewables Hub in the docks, which will support thousands of jobs in our city and help to underscore our future economic resilience.”

Ports and harbour infrastructure are recognised to have an enormous role to play in the growth of the multi-billion pounds renewables sector which, with support from government and industry, is likely to grow ever more quickly. Leith’s proximity to the North Sea, which is set to become home to many more offshore wind developments, coupled with the natural deep waters of the Firth of Forth, makes the port the ideal location to support existing and future developments.

This entirely private investment will see the creation of a marine berth capable of accommodating the world’s largest offshore wind installation vessel. Its heavy lift capability backed up by land for logistics and marshalling will be supplemented by the upgrading of a 140-acre cargo handling site to accommodate lay down; assembly; supply chain and manufacturing opportunities. The scale of commitment is staggering – a total area equivalent to around 100 full size football pitches. That is a huge area of industrial land transformed to help build a cleaner, better future for our city and our country with the potential to:

  • Support the growth of offshore wind in the North Sea
  • Secure the Firth of Forth as the driver for Scotland’s green energy transition
  • Create future opportunities for existing and new businesses at Leith Docks
  • Help spearhead Edinburgh’s and Scotland’s Covid-19 recovery plan
  • Support up to 1,000 high quality, long term direct jobs and about 2,000 indirect jobs

Liz added: “The time for action could not be more right. The recent UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report delivered a “code red for humanity”, with predictions that entire nations could be lost to rising sea levels within decades.  Parts of Leith and Seafield, amongst others, could also be lost. The report was prepared by 234 scientists from 65 countries, drawing on more than 14,000 research papers.

“Forth Ports is investing to reinforce the vital role of the Firth of Forth in Scotland’s clean energy transition. It will further underpin the position of Scotland’s Central Belt as a leading area of engineering and manufacturing skills and capabilities.

“The potential is enormous; the private sector leadership exists; and the investment is demonstrable. To make it happen, we need political will to match political rhetoric if our nation and its capital are to enjoy a brighter, greener, wealthier future.”

Major investment will enable full repair of historic structure

Forth Ports has announced plans to fully repair the Category A Listed Victoria Swing Bridge located at the Port of Leith to conserve the bridge for the future and create a useable space for the local community.

The private six figure investment will see the bridge, which is the largest counterweighted swing bridge in Scotland, fully repaired, with a phased programme of specialist works which will protect the character and form of the bridge.

Forth Ports’ plans are outlined in a Listed Building Consent application which has been lodged with City of Edinburgh Council (CEC). The proposed repair programme is to be carried out in phases and includes:

  • The full refurbishment of the northern and southern walkways
  • Re-decking the central carriage way
  • Replacement of the decked turning circle areas
  • A full repair and repaint of metalwork on the bridge

The Victoria Swing Bridge was designed by Alexander Rendel and opened in 1874 to provide an efficient road and railway route for the port following the completion of construction of Albert Dock in 1869. The bridge was originally B listed but was upgraded to an A listing in 2014. It is constructed of riveted wrought iron, timber and steel and originally carried a double rail track along its central deck (providing access for both trains and road vehicles) and features pedestrian walkways on either side (NB: see Notes to Editors for more detailed information).

Following receipt of Listed Building Consent from the Council, Phase I – the refurbishment of the north and south pedestrian walkways – is expected to be undertaken this year, with the remaining work anticipated being undertaken in 2022. Pedestrian access to the bridge for the local community will be maintained for the duration of the works.

Commenting on the project, Charles Hammond, Group Chief Executive at Forth Ports, said: “The Victoria Swing Bridge is a well kent sight in Leith and it is an important and rare surviving example of our heritage. The plans we have submitted to the Council have been well thought through and will ensure that the repairs are appropriate for the conservation of this important landmark.

“We want to also create a useable space for the local community and we hope that once the bridge has been restored, people will be able to enjoy this historic space.”

“The battle against the coronavirus takes a vast amount of energy, and I don’t feel it is possible to carry on with that and fight the upcoming election for the party leadership.”

Edinburgh businessman Mark Glasgow plans to invest £3 million into a series of energy training centres around Scotland to improve the industry’s skills shortage in the country.

Construction is already underway on the first Energy Training Academy in the capital, with further sites earmarked for Glasgow and the north-east.

The Edinburgh facility is due to be completed in November.

“This is a vision I have had for some time and given the speed at which our industry is changing towards more sustainable heating technologies, I felt now was the time to really push my plans forward,” said Mr Glasgow, owner of the Edinburgh Boiler Company and Glasgow Boiler Company.

“The next few years are going to be critical in our industry.

“The skills shortage we are currently facing as an industry is concerning and I thought it important to provide a modern training centre with a focus on renewables.

“Initially this will be in Edinburgh and the plan is to then extend that education offering around Scotland by establishing regional training centres.

“We have recently added heat pumps to our list of installation services and more developments are in the pipeline. The academy will be used by engineers looking to upskill to renewables and to give our current installation and repair staff a place to learn ‘in-house’ as we look to continue leading the way in home heating in Scotland.

“There will also be adult learning programmes, which will be ideal for the gas/renewable engineer of tomorrow who is looking to get into this growing sector.

“We will have a range of courses focusing on renewables, and we will be using some of the best lecturers and trainers in the business. We will be a one-stop shop for theory and practical allowing new starts to train at our academy and then do the all-important on-site portfolio work in the company of our experienced engineers.”

One of the industry’s most progressive businesses, the Edinburgh Boiler Company was established in 2015 and is the city’s largest boiler installers.

“There is a real need for a local company like ours which people can rely on,” added Mr Glasgow.

“The significant investment we are putting into the Energy Training Academy underlines our commitment to providing not only the best possible training for our employees but the best service to our customers.”

Like many, you will have heard that ISDN is set to be switched off in 2025, or to you and I, phonelines in the UK. It is not just business phone lines either, it includes home telephone lines.

Don’t panic, it is not happening overnight, however, it is happening a bit quicker than we though as some exchanges are already being decommission in Scotland. Due to this being a pretty big deal, a lot of telecom suppliers are doing a bit of scaremongering. Advising businesses that if they do not change to a hosted or VoIP solution now, they will be cut off from their customers. Some are even advising that unless they change system and service, they will lose their business phone number!

Some telecom suppliers are advising that you will need to completely change your existing system. This might not actually be true as some systems can be converted to use SIP. So you would not need to fork out on expensive new equipment with a lengthy new lease that will tie you down for years to come.

So let’s keep this brief and factual. Yes, you will, eventually, have to move to VoIP. (basically calls will go over your broadband connection rather than your phone lines.)
However, also consider what other services your lines currently support. Alarms, door entry systems, EPOS systems, etc.

So, 2025? Why do I need to look at this just now? For the reasons above. There is a lot to consider no matter what size your company is. If you have not already, try and find some time to look into this change and the many options you have as a business.

Construction and development company, the Cruden Group, has expanded its green portfolio and commitment to green energy housebuilding by signing a 3-year enhanced green energy supply contract with ScottishPower. This means that the Group will purchase electricity which always comes exclusively from renewable sources, with 100% of green electricity from wind farms with zero CO2 emissions.

In support of Cruden’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, ScottishPower as a Principal Partner for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), is working closely with the Cruden Group to further develop a range of renewable and other clean, green energy solutions and smart technologies to reduce emissions and drive down homeowner energy bills.

The Cruden Group builds around 1,500 new homes each year and together with ScottishPower, they are working on several market leading initiatives to offer more zero carbon alternatives.  These include ground and air source heat pumps, installing infrastructure that will enable electric vehicle charging as standard across many developments, rolling out low carbon heating solutions for both apartment developments and family homes, installing photovoltaic solar panels and energy storage solutions and incorporating Passivhaus Standards to create energy efficient homes using innovative carbon neutral methods of construction.

The Cruden Group’s commitment to green energy also extends to their management offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow.  Cruden’s head office in Cambuslang benefits from electricity from renewable sources via solar panels covering 90% of the roof of the office building.

ScottishPower is the first integrated energy company in the UK to generate 100% green electricity and is delivering almost £10 billion investment in clean energy between 2020-2025 to help unlock Net Zero.

Kevin Reid, Chief Executive of the Cruden Group said; “We are pleased to continue our strong and successful 14-year partnership with ScottishPower with this new renewable energy agreement.  We strive to continuously improve the environment through innovation and this new green deal will help us further reduce carbon emissions, exceed carbon reduction targets and positively contribute towards the global climate change agenda.”

Stuart Angell, New Connections Sales Development Manager at ScottishPower said: “I’m delighted to extend and enhance our relationship with the Cruden Group and for ScottishPower to be associated with a like-minded company that is striving to deliver excellence in the marketplace and prioritises the customer experience”.

“As ScottishPower have looked to deliver market leading initiatives, the Cruden Group have helped shape this change with their invaluable feedback and creative ideas. As work towards a carbon neutral future, we will continue to engage with the Cruden Group to understand their challenges and what we can jointly bring to the market to satisfy our goals and customer needs”.
