Myanmar, an Asset or a Liability?
The UK is the fifth largest investor in Myanmar – a country emerging from decades of dictatorship and suppression.
With the lifting of US and EU sanctions, November’s landslide election victory for the National League for Democracy, and the launching of the country’s first ever Stock Exchange – does Myanmar represent an opportunity or a threat for investors based in Scotland?
On April 28th 2016, the Asia Scotland Institute will explore both the economic, and the political situation in Myanmar – and its appeal and relevance to professionals in Scotland. The afternoon event in Edinburgh will involve Keith Win, director of the Myanmar Britain Business Association, and Peter Popham, former South Asia correspondent for The Independent.
Popham is one of the first journalists to have interviewed Aung San Suu Kyi after her release from detention in 2002, and is author of the best-selling biography of Suu Kyi, The Lady and the Peacock. He has recently published The Lady and the Generals, describing Myanmar’s five transformative years since the leader’s release from house arrest. Copies will be on sale at the event. Win also met with Aung San Suu Kyi during her imprisonment, and initiated an important dialogue between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Military in November 1998. The interaction led to the parties continuing private discussions over a number of years.
