Australia-UK FTA enters its third round
The second round of negotiations on the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was held virtually from 21 September to 2 October, with substantial progress made in over forty sessions. The third round is scheduled for 23 November to 4 December.
Australia’s High Commissioner to the UK, the Hon George Brandis QC, appeared before the House of Lords on 21 October to highlight the economic benefits to both countries of a comprehensive and ambitious FTA. He stressed the true test of ambition for this FTA was whether it would provide a pathway to tariff and quota free trade between our two countries – “That is no more than what the UK has had for decades with the EU and it remains… the objective for the UK’s post-Brexit relationship with Europe… The relationship between Australia and the UK deserves no less.” The House of Lords session can be viewed here.
