Wanted: Engineers to inspire 3-7 year olds

Posted: 19th February 2021

The Let’s Do Engineering project led by Heriot-Watt University needs 20 engineers to help bring engineering to life for 3-7 year olds.

Research shows that, even at this early age, children rule out certain careers as being “not for them”.

Dr Helen Bridle is leading Let’s Do Engineering to help young children, their families and teachers understand the breadth and diversity of engineering.

Bridle, a microfluidics engineer at Heriot-Watt University, wants to recruit 20 engineers from industry and academia to help develop materials that bring the job to life, and show how exciting and varied it can be.

Dr Bridle said: “Every child deserves to dream big and not have their aspirations narrowed by stereotypes.

“Engineers are some of the most creative people we have. They build bridges, design prosthetic limbs and rockets, keep our water clean and come up with ways to tackle the effects of climate change.

“In this project, we’ll be asking them to help us create fun and inspiring resources that support play and learning, and encourage the next generation of engineers.

“We want all children, and their teachers and parents, to understand how exciting a career it can be, and how varied.”

Engineers who sign up will take part in an initial survey and commit to taking part in one digital workshop. They will then work with creative arts professionals to develop resources that can be used by 3-7 year olds around the UK.

The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council under the Engagement Champions Awards.
