Visitors to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow will have the opportunity to be transported to the heart of Scotland’s World Heritage Sites as part of a special event to mark World Heritage Day.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will host a full day of free activities on Tuesday 11 April to celebrate Scotland’s rich heritage, in the run up to World Heritage Day on 18 April.
This fun-filled day out will give visitors the chance to virtually visit each of Scotland’s six World Heritage Sites in spectacular 3D, find out more about what World Heritage is all about and take part in a number of activities the whole family can enjoy.

Visitors can try out the very latest in technology by putting on a VR headset to explore Scotland’s iconic World Heritage sites in 3D. See first-hand the cutting-edge technology used to develop interactive 3D digital models of the sites and rise to the challenge by having a go at the educational games on offer, courtesy of The Scottish Ten team from Historic Environment Scotland and The Glasgow School of Art.

From dressing up as a 19th century millworker from New Lanark and handling replica Neolithic and Roman artefacts to designing a Forth Bridge jigsaw puzzle and building your very own St Kilda Mailboat, there’s plenty on offer to keep everyone engaged.

Make your way around the stalls where you will experience Scotland’s unique World Heritage Sites being brought to life. Staff from HES and partner organisations will also be on hand to serve up fun facts and stories and to answer your questions.

Dr Rebecca Jones, Head of the Archaeology and World Heritage Team at HES, said: “Scotland’s World Heritage Sites span thousands of years and hundreds of miles, and you’re never far from a place of worldwide significance. This event at the Kelvingrove gives visitors a great opportunity to experience these sites in a remarkable new way, find out more and perhaps plan their own trips to explore them further – with so much to see and do, it’s a must visit for the whole family.”

The World Heritage Day event takes place from 10am – 4pm on Tuesday 11 April, 2017 at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. Entrance is free and non-ticketed.
