Virgin Hotels Edinburgh Unveils Next Artist In Residence: Jennifer Court

Posted: 29th July 2025

Jennifer Court, a talented self-taught artist and illustrator, has been announced as Virgin Hotels Edinburgh’s latest Artist in Residence, taking up the highly sought-after position from August to October.

Virgin Hotels Edinburgh is proud to announce Jennifer Court as the latest Artist in Residence, taking up the unique creative post from August through October 2025. A self-taught illustrator with a passion for architectural detail and Edinburgh’s rich history, Jennifer will bring her signature pen-and-ink style to life inside The Unicorn Room – a purpose-built studio nestled in the turret of the historic India Buildings.

The Artist in Residence programme, now in its second year, was created to champion local creatives by offering them time, space, and exposure – all within the vibrant environment of Virgin Hotels Edinburgh. Artists receive complimentary access to The Unicorn Room studio and in-house gallery space to create, exhibit, and sell their work directly to guests and visitors.

After a competitive selection process, Jennifer was chosen for this prestigious opportunity. Originally from Penicuik, she began her artistic journey later in life, following her studies in art history and theology at Glasgow University. What began as a hobby in sketching evolved into a full-fledged passion, leading Jennifer to leave her full-time career in her mid-twenties to pursue her love for medieval art. Her work, celebrated for its intricate detail and historical accuracy, vividly brings Scotland’s landmarks and hidden architectural gems to life with pen and ink.

Jennifer’s connection to Virgin Hotels Edinburgh began over 7 years ago, when she sketched the building long before its transformation from a registry office into a luxury hotel. That early illustration caught the eye of the Virgin Hotels team, who later commissioned a reimagined version – complete with the hotel’s signature red door. Today, Jennifer’s art is featured across menus, welcome cards, and wedding stationery at the hotel.

Mafalda Albuquerque, General Manager at Virgin Hotels Edinburgh, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jennifer as our next Artist in Residence. Her ability to bring Edinburgh’s history to life through such intricate detail is truly remarkable. This programme is our way of supporting local talent and giving artists a platform to share their vision with the world.”

During the residency, Jennifer will focus on a new series inspired by the views from The Unicorn Room, spotlighting overlooked areas and untold stories from around the city. Visitors can also view previous collections, including Scottish castles and a newly completed series on the closes of the Royal Mile.

With unique behind the scenes access, visitors can meet the artist, watch her at work in The Unicorn Room, and learn more about her creative process. Beginning in September, guests and locals will also be able to attend hands-on workshops led by the artist. Select original works will be available for purchase throughout the residency, with postcards and smaller print sizes available within the Virgin boutique.

Mafalda added: “Our guests love seeing behind the scenes, meeting the artists, and learning the stories behind each piece. We can’t wait for them to experience Jennifer’s work up close.”

Jennifer Court, Artist in Residence, said: “I am incredibly honoured and thrilled to be selected as the next Artist in Residence at Virgin Hotels Edinburgh. This residency is a chance to slow down, connect with people, and share stories through art.

“Edinburgh has always inspired me, and now getting to draw it from a turret with 360-degree views of the city is honestly surreal. It’s a dream opportunity, and I’m grateful to Virgin Hotels for making space for artists like me.”

Visitors interested in meeting Jennifer Court or learning more about her work can find her at the hotel or reach out via Instagram or email at info@jennifercourt.co.uk
