Managing Discrimination and Diversity – Unconscious Bias Workshop

Managing Discrimination and Diversity – Unconscious Bias Workshop

@ Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Delivered Online Midlothian

13th August, 2020 09:30-12:30 Training 95.00-115.00
Overview:

Everyone has unconscious biases. The brain uses shortcuts to speed up decision-making and unconscious bias is a by-product. It is natural, unintended and can impact decision-making, diversity, inclusion and culture but it can also be mitigated.

We need to learn to manage our unconscious bias. Suppressing or demonising bias makes the problem worse not better. Possible Impacts of unconscious bias in the workplace are wide ranging from discrimination and lack of diversity to poor team dynamics and difficult conversations.

Workshop Outline:

This workshop would explore why diversity is important, what is unconscious bias, how it impacts and how we can learn to manage our unconscious bias and lessen the impact it has on our decision making and everyday work. It explores, what determines who we are and our bias, the impacts of culture, language, questioning and trust and how we can mitigate and better manage our unconscious bias.

Learning Outcomes:

After the workshop you should be:
  • More aware of the impact of unconscious bias on your day-to-day work and be better able to recognise your own biases.
  • Understand how greater diversity can positively impact your personal performance, the performance of your team and your department/function.
  • Understand why decisions should be justified on evidence and not feelings.
  • Have greater awareness of how the language we use and the questions we ask, impacts and reflects our unconscious bias and what we achieve.
  • Focus more on the positive behaviours of people and not negative stereotypes.
  • What makes us more vulnerable to the negative impacts of unconscious bias.
  • How to give feedback and conduct ‘one to ones’ that are less impacted by our unconscious bias.
Workshop Duration:

Interactive three hour workshop conducted online with a couple of natural breaks.
