Leader, Manager & Operator – Which mode are you in?

The words leadership and management are often used in the same sentence but what is the difference? Today at work, are you in operator, manager or leader mode and why? During a typical week, which mode do you spend most of your time in?

In this world where there is always an important deadline, another email or telephone call, how do you get out of the present to focus on the future?  This workshop explores the differences between these different modes of operator, manager and leader and how to develop your approach to consciously choosing the mode you want to be in.
 
Course Outcomes: 
  • A better understanding of the different operating modes and what takes you into operator and manager mode.
  • A greater awareness on how to stay focused on your priorities and the future you want to create.
  • Understand how you maybe limiting yourself at present by not working at the right level.
  • Be better at spending more time in ‘playing to win’ mode.
  • Greater awareness of how you can best add value to your organisation/ business.
  • Understand the impact of your operating mode on how your team, department or business performs.
 
You will have the awareness and confidence to move between the different modes and ensure that you spend more time focused on ‘only what you can uniquely do’ and where you can add the most value.

Course outline:
This is an interactive workshop that focuses on you and your approach to management and leadership. It is explores the impact of these different operating modes on both you and your team. It will help you get clarity on what is important to you, your priorities and how to stay focused on them. It will review how much time you spend focused on the past, the present and the future and how you maybe limiting yourself at present. It will explore how you can be at your best ‘playing to win’ more of the time and what triggers you to go into ‘just surviving mode’. Finally, it will discuss the correlation between your operating mode and what you and your people achieve.
 
Trainer info:
This course is led by Mark Douglas. Mark is a director, mentor and coach who has had a wide and varied career.

He has been a retail manager, change management consultant, led various functions including Supply Chain & Operations, HR, Learning & Development, and Property Development for a major multinational company, an associate lecturer with Dundee Business School and since 2012 a business partner in Blue Ptarmigan and a business mentor and coach with the Princes Trust. He has extensive experience in the design and delivery of people based ‘performance improvement interventions’ for SME’s, large corporations and public sector bodies.

Mark has an MBA from the Open University and Pharmacy BSc (Hons) from Heriot-Watt University. His MBA electives were ‘Strategy’, ‘Creativity, Innovation and Change’, ‘Human Resources’ and ‘Financial Strategy’.
