The imperative for, and assistance with, growing your business activity with China

Posted: 10th November 2020

Demographic and economic trends have shifted the centre of gravity of the global economy to Asia. The Asian economy is now larger than the rest of the world combined. China is central to this growth, by 2023 it will contribute over 28% of global growth. Supported by world-leading technology and innovation, China’s increasing consumption and its integration into global trade is driving the future global economy. Its exports to the rest of the world remain key, but their domestic economies, along with a growing middle class are an increasing source of growth.

China is also shaping the adoption of digital technology. With over 900 million internet users, livestreaming ecommerce has become a major driver of China’s online consumption. Similarly, China’s large-scale adoption of digital payment systems through Alipay and WeChat Pay creates an alternative payment ecosystem that creates new incentives for commerce between merchants, consumers and payment system providers.

In our interconnected economy, Scottish businesses need to acknowledge China’s growing importance in the world. Indeed, they have a responsibility to better understand China’s business practices, values and culture if they are to successfully develop effective connections and opportunities. The Asia Scotland Institute exists to provide insight, to stimulate and promote the exchange of knowledge on Asia. Working with the world of business, academia and government we aim to promote deeper understanding of this important region. See more at www.asiascot.com.
