China is also shaping the adoption of digital technology. With over 900 million internet users, livestreaming ecommerce has become a major driver of China’s online consumption. Similarly, China’s large-scale adoption of digital payment systems through Alipay and WeChat Pay creates an alternative payment ecosystem that creates new incentives for commerce between merchants, consumers and payment system providers.

In our interconnected economy, Scottish businesses need to acknowledge China’s growing importance in the world.
