Brodies LLP invite you to join their annual food and drink conference at Perth Racecourse.

This year’s conference theme will be growth, and will be held Friday, 03 November from 09:30 – 15:30.

We are witnessing a period of unprecedented prosperity in the Scottish food and drink sector, with exports valued at £1.2 billion for the first three months of 2017 – a year-on-year increase of £124 million. 2016 was a record year for food and drink and this trend shows every sign of continuing.

Scotland Food & Drink’s strategy to grow the sector to £30 billion by 2030 will require investment across all areas, including people, skills development, supply chain management and innovation.

Our conference will provide an opportunity to hear from industry experts on how they have grown their businesses and plan further expansion, whether by achieving their own strategic objectives or through greater industry collaboration.

Further speakers and the full conference programme will be announced in due course, but in the meantime we are delighted to confirm the following industry experts:

• James Withers, Chief Executive – Scotland Food & Drink
• Ton Christiaanse, UK Chief Executive – Brakes Group
• Dougal Sharp, Founder & Chief Brewer – Innis & Gunn
• Tony Lamb, Head of Food & Drink – Department for International Trade

As the Conservative Party Conference continues today (Monday) in Manchester, the British Chambers of Commerce has called on the governing party to demonstrate competence and coherence – not division and disorganisation – in the interests of the UK’s economic well-being.

The leading business organisation – which represents tens of thousands of UK companies employing nearly six million people – has flagged on-going business concerns over the public disagreements within the Cabinet around the Brexit process, as well as an insufficient focus on supporting the domestic economy, as areas for immediate attention.

BCC Director General Adam Marshall has called on the Prime Minister and her party to shore up business confidence by ensuring that Brexit negotiations deliver a comprehensive transition period and pragmatic trade talks by the end of 2017, and by increasing attention to the many domestic issues that hold back business appetite for investment and risk.

Speaking from Manchester, BCC Director General Adam Marshall said:

“Businesspeople across Britain are growing impatient with division and disorganisation at the heart of the party of government, and have made it very clear that they expect competence and coherence from ministers as we move into a critical period for the economy.

“Public disagreements between Cabinet ministers in recent weeks have only served to undermine business confidence, not just on Brexit negotiations, but also on the many issues where firms need to see clear action from government closer to home. Action to cut the up-front cost of doing business, build key infrastructure, help firms plug increasing skills gaps, and to support investment and risk-taking must be front and centre on the government’s agenda.

“On Brexit, businesses are clear that they want a comprehensive transition period, lasting at least three years, and pragmatic discussions on the future trading relationship between the UK and the EU firmed up by the end of 2017. They will judge the government’s progress on Brexit by this yardstick – not by public speeches or pronouncements – and will take investment and hiring decisions accordingly.”

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) outlined by China’s President Xi Jinping is one of the most significant and substantial investment and development programmes to come out of China since the building of the Great Wall.

On October 4 & 5, University of Edinburgh’s McEwan Hall will host a conference for businesses and policy-makers to understand more about the world’s largest economic development initiative and how you could participate.

The Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland (MTBCOS). The launch of a new initiative with Fergus Ewing MSP and business owners. THE Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland (MTBCOS) is supporting a multi-million pound economic boom as businesses create new and innovative products for the soaring numbers of cyclists taking to the great outdoors, business leaders heard today. Two Edinburgh-based companies will headline a new conference that aims to bring together industry experts and academics from the worlds of food, nutrition and sports science.

Active Root and Tony Fullerton of Stoats will speak at the Cycling & Sports – Opportunities in Food and Drink conference, which is to be held in Dundee on 22 August.

A collaboration between the Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland and hosts Abertay University, the event will be attended by Scottish food and drink producers, members of the business support industry and academic staff.

Aimed at stimulating the exchange of ideas, analysing trends and sharing expertise, the purpose of the conference is to build partnerships across the sectors.

Active Root, a new natural ginger based sports drink company from Edinburgh, will provide an insight into their product, which was borne out of co-founder Will Townsend’s experience during the London Marathon.

Tony Fullerton of Stoats will also give a presentation, speaking about his firm’s range of quick and easy snacks and cereals – from porridge sachets, pots, bars and boxes to oatcakes and mueslis.

Some of the businesses signed up to attend are already making cycling and sports produce, while others are considering diversifying.

Networking and speed pitching sessions will take place in addition to a series of talks and one to one sessions.

Organiser Danny Cowe of the Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland, who will present a talk on opportunities in the cycling industry, said there is a real chance for Scottish businesses to tap into a global market for sports and nutrition worth over $20billion.

He added: “Cycling and sports products command high price points compared to general food stuffs and this event is an opportunity to look at how food and drink businesses can best reach that market.

“There is a major buzz around sports nutrition and health at the moment, so producing new or enhanced products can only benefit both industry and those participating in sport.”

The Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland is a joint initiative headed by Edinburgh Napier University and Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland, with project partner Scottish Enterprise. The project is funded by the Scottish Funding Council and Edinburgh Napier University.

From market research to product development; knowledge transfer, testing and product launches, we are here to help Scottish businesses in capitalising in one of the country’s fastest growing sports and to help bring Scottish mountain biking products and services to an international audience.

The Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE) Annual Conference will take place at Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh, from 31st May until 2nd June.

Over 120 arts management experts from the USA, Canada, Europe, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombia and across the UK will come together for the first time in the Scottish capital to discuss the latest research, policy and practice in arts and cultural management education, as well as address the future of the industry.

The theme of this year’s conference is New Places, Spaces, and Faces: Exploring Possibilities and Crossing Borders.

Keynote speakers will be Shona McCarthy, CEO of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society; and JP Singh, Director of the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for International Cultural Relations. Featured speakers will include Lynne Halfpenny, Director of Culture for City of Edinburgh Council and QMU graduate; and Lindsay Robertson, Service Manager – Arts, Festivals, and Events for City of Edinburgh Council.

Cultural activities and workshops will take place across the Capital, including an exclusive pre-conference Festivals Workshop delivered by Festivals Edinburgh, an opening reception at Dovecot Studios, and special site visits to Summerhall, Stills Photography Studio, the Festival and King’s Theatres, Creative Scotland and The Hub.

QMU was chosen as the host venue for this landmark event due to its widely recognised expertise in creativity and culture, including its internationally popular postgraduate programme, MA Arts, Festival and Cultural Management.

Dr David Stevenson, Head of Division for Media, Communication and Performing Arts at QMU, and programme leader for MA Arts, Festival and Cultural Management, said: “We’re extremely proud to have been selected to host this landmark cultural management event in the UK for the first time.

“We hope that the conference will establish an ongoing conversation among thought leaders and leading networks in cultural arts management education and related fields, as well as reinforce QMU’s international reputation for expertise in creativity and culture.

“The conference will also help to strengthen and build the University’s links with a variety of arts sector partners around the world.”

QMU is currently working in partnership with Arts Council Malta to influence the future of the cultural sector in Malta as its capital city, Valletta, prepares to become European Capital of Culture in 2018. QMU’s Dr Stevenson recently visited Malta to deliver a programme of training with a diverse range of cultural organisations, including the Valletta Film Festival; BLITZ: a contemporary art project space; and Opening Doors, an arts association that promotes the active involvement of adults with learning disabilities in the arts. All of the organisations involved were part of Art Council Malta’s Cultural Partnership Agreement, which is part of its five-year training strategy focusing on partnerships with a number of national and international organisations.

Katy Coy, Executive Director of AAAE, said: “We’re thrilled to be in Edinburgh, a world renowned cultural hub, for this year’s conference.

“As the arts and cultural management field internationalises, it’s critical to cross borders and create opportunities for connection and exchange, as the theme of our conference suggests. We’re delighted to partner with QMU to provide an exceptional opportunity for our members and colleagues to do just that with this event.”

Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has bid goodbye to another year at the All-Energy conference, its third as headline sponsor. The annual event, which took place on 10 and 11 May at Glasgow’s Scottish Events Campus, is the largest renewable energy event in the UK.

As the conference came to a close, the firm’s 90-strong Energy and Natural Resources group resumed its busy practice of acting for key industry players across the whole spectrum of renewable energy projects.

Clare FosterSpeaking at the close of the event, Clare Foster, Head of Clean Energy at the firm commented:
“This is the third year we’ve acted as headline sponsor for All-Energy, and we are delighted yet again by the calibre of the event. As with previous years, All-Energy 2017 provided an excellent opportunity for our Energy and Natural Resources team to connect with our clients in the sector, forge new relationships and exchange ideas with renewable energy professionals who travel from all over the UK and further afield to attend. The conference and seminar programme covered all aspects of renewable energy generation and provided an excellent platform for us to showcase the expertise from across our firm.”

The event got off to an auspicious start when Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and Vice Chancellor, University of Strathclyde, was joined by The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon. Ms Sturgeon spoke about the Scottish Government’s commitment to renewable energy production and why it is so important to get it right, saying:
“Over the past ten years, our pattern of energy consumption has changed considerably, helping us to meet – and exceed – our 2020 target for reducing energy consumption six years early.

“Earlier this year we published our draft Energy Strategy. And what that does is set out our long-term plan to create an integrated, low carbon energy system – one that will benefit our economy, our environment and the people of this country.”

Setting the tone for the rest of the event, the All-Energy panels looked at the myriad of available options and technologies to meet these targets. And this was certainly the focus of the Sustainable Cities Panel, which Clare Foster, opened by asking whether the Scottish government’s energy strategy and its desire to move away from traditional energy generation to a synergy of renewable energy technologies and a low carbon future could really become a reality.

Out of the ensuing debate, covering everything from strengthening government policy to the need for better local leadership, emerged a new word to describe what is needed to make sustainable cities a reality – “joinedupness”. The phrase, coined by Jonathan Guthrie of the Robertson Group, expresses the need for more joined up or cohesive thinking from policy makers, community leaders, and anyone else who is working to make decarbonisation happen.

The announcement that the world’s largest floating wind farm scheduled for construction off Scotland’s North East coast also generated a lot of interest and discussion during the panel session which provided the market outlook for offshore wind , chaired by Shepherd and Wedderburn partner, Patricia Hawthorn.

Liz McRobb, partner at the firm, well known for her work in the utilities sector, spoke on Aviation mitigation – the ‘airscape’ in a post RO world; while solicitor, Stephanie Mill provided a whistle-stop tour of the key milestones between gaining consent and commencing construction of offshore projects, taking time along the way to answer questions from the floor; and David Anderson explored dispute resolution.

Shepherd and Wedderburn partner John Grady also chaired a session on turning waste into energy and during that panel session, G. John Kuipers, CEO & Owner of Pyr-Oil Group perfectly summed up the motivations behind the drive to turn waste into something useful, saying “we want to clean up the world.”
At the firm’s exhibition stand, Shepherd and Wedderburn lawyers chatted with delegates on a variety of topics including the Scottish Government’s Energy Strategy, as well as a host of other issues facing the energy sector.

The day two plenary session focused on Brexit and its implications for the UK energy sector. Chaired by Dr Nina Skorupska CBE, CEO, Renewable Energy Association, the panel comprised academics, leading figures from the industry and again featured the firm’s Clare Foster, who this time was contributing to the debate on what Brexit means in the short and medium term for the UK.
