Scotland Shines in Latest FDI Report

Posted: 29th January 2025

Scotland’s cities and sectors are emerging as key drivers of international investment, according to the latest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Report published by Irwin Mitchell and Wright, Johnston & Mackenzie LLP (WJM).

The report highlights Scotland’s pivotal role in attracting overseas investors, with a focus on the nation’s thriving industries, city rankings, and transformative initiatives like Green Freeports.

Building on Autumn insights with fresh research into the value and impact of FDI on Scotland’s economy, key findings explore Scotland’s growth sectors, investment hotspots, and the global connections shaping the nation’s economic future.

Scotland’s major cities continue to impress investors. Edinburgh and Glasgow are ranked among the most attractive UK locations for FDI, driven by their financial services, real estate, and technology sectors. Aberdeen is also diversifying its appeal, leveraging its energy expertise while leading the charge in renewable energy innovation.

Meanwhile, Dundee’s burgeoning gaming and life sciences industries, coupled with Inverness’s strategic importance as part of the Inverness and Cromarty Green Freeport, are setting the stage for economic transformation in these regions.

The Inverness and Cromarty Green Freeport is a standout feature in the report, demonstrating the value of Scotland’s Investment Zones. Designed to boost trade, create jobs, and champion green innovation, the Freeport is positioning Scotland as a leader in sustainable economic growth; a key takeaway from our conference with Irwin Mitchell last year.

The FDI report highlights renewable energy, technology, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing as Scotland’s standout growth sectors. Scotland’s leadership in offshore wind and hydrogen projects aligns with global investor demand for sustainable practices, while its universities and research hubs continue to drive innovation and attract talent.

The report features expert commentary from industry leaders and Irwin Mitchell’s international desks, providing global perspectives on FDI into the UK.

WJM’s Managing Partner, Fraser Gillies, said: “This report highlights Scotland’s immense potential as a destination for global investment, providing invaluable insights into the sectors and initiatives driving our economic growth. It also underscores the collaborative efforts between business, government, and international partners to create opportunities that benefit communities across Scotland.

“The Inverness and Cromarty Green Freeport is a perfect example of how transformative initiatives can drive investment and innovation, and outside of the traditional economic hubs, too.

“Hosting our first ever Freeport conference last autumn was a fantastic opportunity to bring together key stakeholders and thought leaders to discuss the region’s potential. The insights shared at the event reinforced how vital collaboration is for the years to come. We’re proud to support these conversations and the businesses shaping Scotland’s future.”

The report is also the foundation for the second series of the “Business but Better” video podcast, hosted by Richard Baigent. The podcast will feature discussions on Freeports and UK investment, providing deeper insights from industry leaders and experts.
