Rediscover the Joy of Sport and Friendship at Meadowbank’s Sporting Memories Club

Posted: 18th September 2025

Free weekly sessions invite over-50s to connect, reminisce, and stay active

Since April, a Sporting Memories Club at Meadowbank Sports Centre has been quietly making a big impact – bringing together sport-loving over-50s to share stories, build friendships, and enjoy gentle activities in a welcoming environment.

Now, organisers are inviting even more people to come along and experience the benefits of this free weekly club, which runs every Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:30 PM at Meadowbank Sports Centre, London Road, Edinburgh EH7 6AE.

Whether you were a player, a fan, or simply enjoy a good sporting tale, the sessions offer a relaxed space to chat about sporting heroes, take part in fun quizzes, and enjoy light indoor games. Refreshments are provided, and no booking is required – just drop in and join the conversation.

“We’ve built a lovely core group since launching in April, but we’d love to welcome new faces,” says Donna Mackey, Partnership Manager at Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland. “It’s a great way to stay connected, especially for those who might be feeling isolated or looking for something new to be part of.”

The Meadowbank club is part of a wider initiative by Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland (SMFS) and Edinburgh Leisure to support older adults – especially those living with dementia, depression, or loneliness – through the power of sport and reminiscence.

Sam Scott, Health Development Officer (Dementia) at Edinburgh Leisure, adds: “This group complements our Movement for Memories programme and the work we do with Alzheimer’s Scotland and is open to anyone over 50 who loves sport. It’s about celebrating Edinburgh’s sporting heritage and creating new memories together.”

Volunteers Welcome

Sporting Memories is always looking for volunteers to help run the sessions. No specialist sports knowledge is needed – just a friendly attitude and a bit of spare time. Full training and resources are provided.
