Queen Margaret University launches Business School and announces expansion of academic portfolio
Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Edinburgh has launched a new Business School following a decision to commit strategic investment to further enhance student experience and promote the breadth of subjects and research within its Division of Business, Enterprise and Management.
Named Queen Margaret Business School, it encompasses the University’s expanding portfolio of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in business, accounting and finance, marketing, events, and hospitality and tourism management, blended and online provision, and executive education. It is a member of the prestigious Chartered Association of Business Schools.
The move puts the spotlight on the University’s focus on strategic and applied research which benefits user communities and supports its aim to reach out to new markets and groups of students through enhanced programmes of study. QMU is currently first in Scotland for graduate employability (HESA, 2017) and third in the UK.
QMU’s teaching and research in business related subjects is distinctive in its emphasis on the need for ethical, social and ecological responsibility in the creation of sustainable value for stakeholders.
Queen Margaret Business School will develop further technology enhanced learning opportunities throughout all its programmes, to make them more accessible and student-centred.
Professor Monika Foster, Head of the Business School, said: “In launching Queen Margaret Business School, we are building on our strengths and our heritage as well as celebrating what we already do well which is research and business study programmes underpinned by our social justice, ethical and social responsibility ethos.
“We already punch well above our weight and have some of the leading researchers in the field, recognised nationally and internationally. We are very collegial and achieve great results in student satisfaction, student attainment, innovation in our programmes, and graduate employability. We will use the higher profile of being a Business School to reach new markets with our wide range of professional and consultancy services to both the public and private sectors.”
QMU currently offers a full range of undergraduate programmes including: Business Management, Business Management with Finance, Enterprise or Marketing, Event Management, International Hospitality and Tourism Management. Queen Margaret Business School aims to enliven and further diversify the programme offering by adding BSc International Marketing, BSc Accounting and Finance and extending work-based learning opportunities, and student engagement in innovation and research.
Postgraduate programmes within the School include Master of Public Administration, MSc in Dispute Resolution, MSc Gastronomy, and MSc in International Management and Leadership. The postgraduate portfolio will be expanded to include MSc Finance and MSc International Marketing.
Business courses at QMU are particularly entrepreneurial in focus and its students and graduates are already benefitting from the University’s Business Innovation Zone which includes an on-campus Business Gateway. The new courses will build on this entrepreneurial culture.
Research centres and groups developed to build capacity in key areas and to facilitate research links between academia, business and the community will also come under the umbrella of Queen Margaret Business School. This spans a wide range of disciplines, including Family Business, Operations and Quality Management, Human Resource Management; Marketing Ombudsman, Complaint Handling, Dispute Resolution and Consumer Affairs.
Committed to fostering a global mindset in its students, Queen Margaret Business School already offers its courses at centres across the world through formal partnerships with international institutions including Metropolitan College in Greece, Institute of Technology and Management, Mumbai, India, East Asia School of Business in Singapore, and Silver Mountain in Kathmandu, Nepal. The School will continue to build and expand its international partnerships.
