QMU shortlisted for two Herald Higher Education Awards

Posted: 7th June 2016

QMU has been shortlisted in two categories in the Herald Higher Education Awards 2016:

• Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community – Queen Margaret Children’s University

• Widening Access Award – Mad People’s History and Identity

‘Mad People’s History and Identity’ is a project that has been implemented to widen participation in higher education, aimed at people who have had lived experience of mental health issues. The partnership, involving Queen Margaret University, CAPS independent Advocacy and NHS Lothian’s Mental Health and Well-being Programme, was formed in 2013 and has delivered courses in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Queen Margaret Children’s University (QMCU) is an outreach initiative created to inspire children (5 to 14 year olds) to acquire a love of learning which will help them develop as successful, confident learners who can contribute positively to their communities. The scheme aims to raise children’s aspirations and boost attainment in schools, regardless of background.

The Herald Higher Education Awards in association with University of the West of Scotland celebrate the extraordinary things that are going on in Scotland’s universities and colleges. The Awards recognise the high standard of education that is offered throughout Scotland, and the level of learning that is produced every year. They also highlight how institutions develop innovative materials and methods in their teaching and explore how colleges and universities market themselves, engage with employers, support students and their focus on sustainability.

The awards will help to build future excellence by facilitating the sharing of good practice and help to raise the status of learning and teaching in Scottish higher education and will take place on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Glasgow.
