QMU expert headlines international social policy conference

Posted: 7th July 2017

Marion Ellison1Queen Margaret University’s Dr Marion Ellison will be a guest speaker at an international social policy conference taking place at Durham University on Monday 10th July.

Dr Ellison, who is a Reader in European Public Sociology and Social Policy at QMU, will join a line-up of global experts at the 50th Anniversary Conference of the Social Policy Association: ‘Social Inequalities: Research, Theory, and Policy’.

The conference will focus on the European Union, Brexit and the implications for social policy in the UK.

The four freedoms which have been the foundational principles of the European Union – the free movement of goods, capital, services and labour will be discussed at the event. These freedoms are themselves the subject of popular discontent, tension and challenge as European societies confront the impact of the global economic and eurozone crisis, austerity and international conflict.

Dr Ellison will play a key role as part of a panel session to help encourage discussion and debate the implications of Brexit for the EU and UK social policy.

The event is being chaired by Dr Patricia Kennett, co-editor of the Journal of Social Policy and includes Professor Wolfgang Streeck, who is an internationally renowned economist and Director of the Max Plank Institute for the Study of Societies in Koln, Professor Naser Meer, Professor of Race Identity and Citizenship at the University of Edinburgh and Dr Theo Papadopoulos, who is an Associate Professor of Economics and Social Policy from the University of Bath.
