President Trump to remove whisky tariffs after King’s visit – MHA comment
Andrew Thurston, Customs Duty & Indirect Tax Consultant, MHA
“This is welcome news for the whisky sector, but recent experience shows how fluid US tariff policy can be. While the President’s announcement is clearly positive, exporters will only have full certainty once the formal order removing the 10% tariff is implemented through US customs processes, allowing the industry to rebuild towards pre‑April 2025 export volumes.
“Importantly, the continued suspension of the 25% single malt tariff remains a critical issue, but yesterday’s announcement is an encouraging signal that US-UK trade relations are moving in a constructive direction.
“With the UK not currently targeted by wider US trade‑deficit measures, there is growing confidence that further progress can be made, either through an extension of the suspension or its permanent removal, giving the sector greater confidence to invest and plan for the future.”
