NERC Joins Enterprise Fellowships as New Funder

Posted: 12th September 2016

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) have joined Scottish Enterprise, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) to support the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s (RSE) prestigious commercialisation award; Enterprise Fellowships.

RSE Enterprise Fellowships enable promising science and technology researchers to grow into successful entrepreneurs through the formation of new companies in which they take a leading role. For the duration of the Fellowship, awardees are able to focus solely on refining their business ideas whilst experiencing some of best commercial training available in the United Kingdom.

Established in 1997, the Fellowship has supported more than 200 individuals to develop and launch new businesses. Companies have been formed across a wide range of fields; from tidal energy generation to therapeutic biologics; golf wearable technology to virtual reality, immersive audio.

NERC supported Enterprise Fellowships will support researchers working within the NERC’s remit of terrestrial, marine, freshwater, science-based archaeology, atmospheric and polar sciences, and Earth observation. These one year Fellowships are open to those based in the UK who study and monitor the physical, chemical and biological processes on which our planet and life itself depends. There is no requirement for applicants to have been involved in research projects previously funded by NERC, but the project for commercialisation should fit within the NERC’s remit.

The deadline for NERC RSE Enterprise Fellowship applications is 9 NOV 2016. More information on the scheme and how to apply can be found here.
