Lothian launches search for 2026 intake of apprentice technicians
Lothian has today (Monday 2 March) opened applications for the next generation of technicians to join its celebrated apprentice engineering programme which has seen more than 150 professionals trained in the past decade.
Open to those aged 16 and over – with no upper age limit – the Apprentice Technician programme provides participants with four years of hands-on training to acquire either an SCQF Level 7 in Heavy Goods and Public Service Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an SCQF Level 6 in Vehicle Body Repair and Alignment upon successful completion.
Working in partnership with GTG, apprentices are given fantastic opportunities to develop their skill set in a modern, purpose-built centre, gain practical experience within Lothian’s garages alongside knowledgeable and experienced colleagues, and earn a competitive wage while they learn.
Graduates of the programme often stay on with Lothian as fully qualified technicians, embarking on successful and rewarding long-term careers.
Dylan Dastey, Engineering Director for Lothian, said: “Our apprentice programme isn’t just training engineers, it’s shaping careers and future proofing our business. Since the scheme was established, more than 150 apprentices have honed their skills here, many going on to thrive as fully qualified technicians, supervisors and managers.
“We’re excited to welcome the next generation of talent to Lothian to help them build lasting, successful careers in our industry.”
Chloe Riddell completed her apprenticeship with Lothian in 2025 and is currently working as a qualified mechanic at our Marine depot. Speaking of the impact the programme had on her, she said: “I tried college [before applying for the apprenticeship] but I wasn’t getting the hands-on experience I needed to be able to learn fully. This apprenticeship gave me what I needed.
“I’m so much more confident in myself now, and I always felt very supported throughout my apprenticeship. We were told there was no such thing as a stupid question, and there was always someone there to help.”
The deadline to apply to Lothian’s apprenticeship programme is Friday 27 March. Visit GTG.co.uk to learn more and apply.
