Lost Shore Surf Resort makes waves in education with Surf and STEM programme for schools
Curriculum-linked school trips now open at Europe’s largest inland surf destination, Edinburgh’s Lost Shore Surf Resort
Lost Shore Surf Resort, Europe’s largest inland surf destination, is making waves in STEM education with the launch of its new Surf and STEM education programme. Designed for pupils from Primary 6 upwards, the programme combines world-class surf coaching with hands-on, curriculum-linked STEM activities. For the first time, schools can also book a full residential week of immersive learning and adventure.
Closely aligned with the Curriculum for Excellence, the programme blends classroom-ready indoor sessions with coached surf and surf-skate sessions, supported by guided reflection to engage learners. Pupils will explore STEM topics such as wave physics, coding, chemical reactions, and sustainable materials, bringing their learning to life in a real, dynamic environment. It’s hands-on, memorable, and fully mapped to the curriculum.
Suzi Hadden, Education Lead at Lost Shore and a former science teacher, said: “Surfing and waves are intrinsically linked – both in practice and in study. This was reflected in this year’s National 5 Physics exam, where the waves generated at Lost Shore featured as a core question. Now, with pupils back in class, we’re inviting schools to take those ideas off the page and onto the water.
“Pupils don’t just learn about wave physics and engineering – they experience it first-hand. By pairing practical STEM with coached outdoor sessions and wellbeing tools, learners return to school more confident, curious, and ready to contribute. It’s measurable learning with lasting impact – and so much more than an exciting school trip.”
Demand for the programme is already growing. In May and June alone, Lost Shore delivered more than 400 beginner surf lessons to school pupils, with a further 150 learners taking part in STEM-linked workshops. Teachers and pupils reported significant boosts in engagement, confidence, and enjoyment.
Every visit is led by qualified instructors and lifeguards, and the resort is fully accessible with adaptive and sensory-aware options available.
Bookings are now open for Autumn/Winter 2025 and Spring 2026. Schools can hold dates or book directly at www.lostshore.com or email eventsandgroups@lostshore.com
