Lateral City appointed to run abbey strand apartments at Holyrood

Posted: 7th June 2019

Lateral City Apartments has been appointed by Royal Collection Trust to operate the new serviced accommodation at Abbey Strand, located at the foot of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and on the doorstep of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, The Queen’s official Scottish residence.

The new rooms, Abbey Strand Apartments at Holyrood, have been created as part of the renovation of the 16th century buildings and will be the fourth property in the Lateral City portfolio, alongside The Edinburgh Grand, Old Town Chambers and Merchiston Residence. The ground and first floor of the buildings will be transformed into a Learning Centre for school groups, families, and adults visiting the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The apartments will overlook a new public physic garden, inspired by some of the earliest recorded gardens at the Palace.

Abbey Strand Apartments at Holyrood are part of a unique location with an absorbing heritage, the buildings having at one time been a medieval almshouse, lodgings for Mary Queen of Scots’ courtiers and a sanctuary for debtors.

In total, nine individual and utterly original apartments will be available to book by visitors to Edinburgh from the autumn 2019.

Each apartment is designed with a nod to the colourful assortment of former inhabitants and include studio, one and two bedroom accommodation. They feature medieval fireplaces and age- old stone walls, which have been brought together with all the essentials of a contemporary lifestyle and the very best holiday accommodation.

All nine apartments also overlook Arthur’s Seat, the highest point in Holyrood Park, which Robert Louis Stevenson described as “a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design.”

Gavin MacLennan is the general manager of the award-winning collection of serviced apartments operated by Lateral City. He said:

“We are delighted to announce that we will be running Abbey Strand Apartments at Holyrood. The property has a unique provenance, existing under many guises, and we have worked closely with Royal Collection Trust to give the building a new and contemporary life for today’s ‘experience’ travellers.

“Authenticity is central to the Lateral City ethos and the design team responsible for both The Edinburgh Grand and Old Town Chambers has created nine original living spaces at Abbey Strand. These apartments pay homage to the building’s past, each taking on the personality of a former resident, but each also has all the high quality facilities expected by visitors to Lateral City apartments.

“The location, too, could not be more perfect.”

Bookings can be made now for November 2019 via www.lateralcity.com
