Edinburgh College’s creative students are ready to take over the city with a number of unique performances and exhibitions taking place at venues across the capital as part of the annual Glow Festival.

The students kicked off Glow with preview performances at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery last night.

Glow, the culmination of a year’s hard work for more than 1,000 of the College’s Creative Industries students, will see students perform and exhibit at venues in Edinburgh throughout April, May and June.

The festival will feature events covering the wide range of the College’s Creative Industries courses including: Performing Arts; Broadcast Media and Photography; Computing; Music and Sound Production; and Art and Design, with music concerts, theatre shows, exhibitions, film showings and more.

The sixth annual Glow festival launched at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery on 24 April with performances from Edinburgh College’s music and musical theatre students. HND Musical Theatre students performed ‘Times Like These’ – a group number taken from their most recent production, Brenda Bly: Teen Detective. The College’s String Ensemble performed ‘Momentum’ by Richard Meyer.

Guests at the launch heard from the College’s Principal Audrey Cumberford and head of Creative Industries Jakki Jefferey, as well as guest speaker Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science Richard Lochhead MSP.

Edinburgh College Principal Audrey Cumberford said: “It’s absolutely wonderful to be launching the sixth annual Glow Festival which will showcase the enormous amount of talent we have within our Creative Industries faculty at Edinburgh College.

“Glow provides our students with a fantastic opportunity to perform and exhibit in the world’s leading festival city, an experience which will undoubtedly serve them well as they take the next steps in their career.

“It’s clear from tonight’s launch that the city of Edinburgh is about to be wowed by a full programme of live performances and exhibitions from each of our creative disciplines over the next ten weeks.”

Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science Richard Lochhead said: “The Glow Festival is the culmination of lots of hard work over the academic year and an opportunity to showcase the work and talent of creative industries students to a wider audience, including potential employers and customers.

“Creative industries make an important contribution to Scotland’s economy, culture and society. I am delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of all the students involved in this year’s festival.”

Students will showcase their skills and talents across some of Edinburgh’s most famous venues including the National Museum of Scotland, the Traverse Theatre, the Filmhouse, the King’s Theatre, the Fruitmarket Gallery and the College’s campuses.

The programme of events includes large-scale end-of-year shows including a musical theatre performance set in late 1920s Berlin, an exhibition of Theatre Costumes based on entertainment over the past 100 years, the PASS Cross Currents dance event and an exhibition of make-up artistry.
