COP26 – The Year of Action

COP26 – The Year of Action

@ Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Delivered Online Edinburgh Midlothian EH2 2LE

25th May, 2021 09:00-10:00 Event
The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 1 – 12 November 2021. The COP26 summit will bring Parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement through the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

This is a hugely important event for Scotland and the UK – but what will the COP26 summit entail? What themes and points of debate/discussion may be raised, and importantly how will this relate to businesses in the capital and across Scotland?

As with many cities around the world, Covid-19 crisis has brought us face to face with long-standing system risks - from poorly funded health care systems, to air pollution that causes underlying health problems, to deforestation that exposes us to new viruses.

Yet against the odds, 2020 was a year of unprecedented climate action. Non-state actors across society mobilized around climate action because we know far too well now that it is easier and cheaper to tackle systemic risks upfront, and mitigate their worst impacts, than to wish them away.  The pandemic has given cities such as Edinburgh, Barcelona Paris, Warsaw, Copenhagen and Toronto a chance to focus on a more green recovery and their cities ambitions to reach net zero. Businesses are also central to ensuring that COP26 represents a clear transition from ambition to implementation on our way to a decarbonised world.

Join us at this event to also find about the Race to Zero campaign, and how you and your business can get involved to help halve emissions by 2030.

Our Speakers
  • Martin Valenti, Head of Climate Enterprise at Scottish Enterprise
  • Fiona Macklin, Race to Zero Campaign Coordinator, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
