Edinburgh Castle Seeks Modern Apprentices

Posted: 3rd March 2016

9 school leavers to gain work experience at Scotland’s number 1 paid visitor attraction.

Historic Environment Scotland is celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week by offering 9 school leavers the opportunity to join the team at Edinburgh Castle on a two-year Modern Apprenticeship.

Starting in June 2016, the Modern Apprentices will spend their first 3 months taking part in a thorough induction of the castle, before being thrown into working life at Scotland’s most popular visitor attraction. Over the two years, apprentices will divide their time between college and hands-on experience of working in one of three main areas: admissions, tour guiding, or retail.

Edinburgh Castle welcomes around 1.5 million visitors annually. It is run by Historic Environment Scotland, the new Non Departmental Government Body which brought together predecessor bodies Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland in October 2015.

Stephen Duncan, Director of Commercial and Tourism at Historic Environment Scotland, said “Modern Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to get hands on experience of what life is like in the workplace, whilst gaining a qualification at the same time.Edinburgh Castle is a busy and dynamic workplace, and the 9 apprentices will definitely have their hands full over the course of their time there – but our staff will welcome them with open arms. This is also a great chance for us to work with the next generation to help them learn and tell the stories of Scotland’s history to international audience.”

When the apprentices have completed their induction, they will each be placed in one area where they will begin working towards their Modern Apprenticeship qualification – an SCQF Level 6 Diploma in Cultural Venue Operations.

The deadline is Friday 25th March 2016 at 12:00.
