Dion and Gobi Go Virtual for Edinburgh’s Dogs and Cats

Posted: 19th May 2020

In 2016 people all across the globe were touched by the amazing story of ‘Finding Gobi’. When extreme ultra marathon runner, Dion Leonard, took to his 155 mile race in the Gobi desert, little did he know he would be befriended by a little stray desert dog, who he would later go on an incredible journey with. The story was covered in media all over the planet, followed by the release of Dion’s international best-selling book ‘Finding Gobi’ in 2017.

The pair have since become global stars, travelling and telling their inspiring story to all generations and becoming strong advocates for animal rescue.

In 2017 the pair, at the time based in Edinburgh, became Animal Champion ambassadors for Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and organised a ‘Jog with Gobi’ 5k race on Portobello promenade to raise funds for the charity. They have been strong supporters of the work of the Home ever since.

With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home’s income, Dion wanted to do something to support the Home in it’s time of need, and decided to organise ‘Virtual Jog with Gobi’ – a 5k run or walk on Saturday 30th May, that the public can do wherever they live in a safe and socially distant manner. Dion and Gobi will be joined on the day by Dion’s wife, Lucja Leonard, who is also an accomplished ultra-marathon runner and passionate animal welfare advocate.

Dion said:

“Gobi’s a born runner, she comes alive exploring the unknown and the thrill of what a new day awaits. Lucja loves to run to feel connected to nature, being with friends and experiencing epic adventures. I love to run to challenge myself, to compete and to push my own boundaries like never before.

The one thing that bonds us is the joy we feel when we run together, spending time out in nature, smiling and breathing fresh air away from distractions where we can just be as one as a family.

We hope that you will join us on the 30th May however you can whether you choose to walk, jog or run the 5km alone or with your loved one; let’s do this together for the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home.”

Nicola Gunn, Director of Development and External Affairs added:

“The pandemic has had a huge effect on the Home’s ability to raise money and now more than ever we need the support of the community who care about animal welfare and rescue. Dion and Lucja have been such wonderful supporters of our work and we are so grateful that they, along with little Gobi, are using their influence to encourage the public to support our work. The original ‘Jog with Gobi’ event in 2017 was such great fun and we can’t wait to see everyone take part in the virtual version!”

It only costs £5 to take part in the event and you can register by visiting edch.org.uk/virtualjogwithgobi. So put your best paw forward and sign up to raise money for Edinburgh and the Lothians stray, lost and abandoned dogs and cats!
