Days left to participate in Edinburgh’s Low Emission Zone consultation

Posted: 19th July 2019
Members of the public are being encouraged to share their views on Edinburgh’s ambitious Low Emission Zone (LEZ) plans before a consultation on proposals ends on Sunday (July 21).
More than 2,000 people have registered their views since the City of Edinburgh Council launched the consultation early last month (June). Edinburgh is on track to become the second Scottish city to implement such a scheme, which will improve air quality for people across the city by tackling pollution from vehicles.

Councillor Lesley Macinnes, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “The response to our consultation has been tremendous, and we are still keen to hear from as many people as possible. Their views and insights, particularly those in the commercial and transport sectors, will help further shape our plans.

“LEZs are key to addressing poor air quality and the significant risk it poses to human health, particularly amongst the most vulnerable members of society. Tackling air pollution benefits everyone – residents, workers and visitors – and as a growing city, we all have a role to play in delivering a Capital that is fit for the future and contributes favourably to everyone’s health and wellbeing.”

The survey can be completed on the Council’s consultation hub.

Edinburgh’s outline LEZ plans are available online and detail the proposed approach to LEZ boundaries and the types of vehicles included, as well as phasing-in arrangements. More information is available on the Council website.

LEZ proposals have been developed in association with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Transport Scotland and address the significant impact higher emission vehicles have on air pollution.

The project is also closely linked to a number of strategies aiming to enhance place-making and connectivity in Edinburgh, including the City Centre Transformation and the City Mobility Plan, of which the LEZ scheme is a key element.
