Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership DIT-SCC Event

Posted: 18th October 2021

The Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) and the Department for International Trade (DIT) are pleased to invite you to our upcoming webinar discussing the opportunities presented by the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

When: Tuesday 19th October

Time: 13:00-14:00

Please note this is open to all businesses in your local network who are interested in international trade opportunities. Register to attend with jerskine@scottishchambers.org.uk by close of play on Monday 19th October.

Joining us for this discussion is Lukas May, Deputy Chief Negotiator for DIT’s CPTPP Negotiations Team.

On the heels of the first Accession Working Group that took place at the end of September this webinar will feature a talk providing information on how Scottish business stands to benefit from CPTPP membership. A Question-and-Answer session will follow, giving attendees the chance to pitch their queries about the agreement to Lukas.

The United Kingdom has begun negotiations to join one of the largest free trade areas in the world. Worth £8.4 trillion in GDP in 2019 (£9 trillion in 2019), the Comprehensive and Progressive Transpacific Partnership (CPTPP) spans the Asia Pacific and the Americas, and includes some of the world’s biggest current and future economies.

Joining CPTPP puts Britain at the heart of a dynamic group of countries, as the world economy increasingly centres on the Pacific region.  And as these economies grow, it is even more important that the UK is in a free trade agreement with them, so that we benefit from this growth. £2bn worth of goods were exported by more than 800 Scottish businesses to CPTPP countries in 2020. UK exports to current CPTPP countries are already set to increase by 65% by 2030, equating to £37 billion.  Joining CPTPP is expected to boost this growth even further, which means supporting more UK jobs.
