Burges Salmon advises on landmark sale in boost for Scotland’s offshore floating wind capabilities

Posted: 4th June 2025

Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon has advised the majority shareholders of Aberdeen-based Encomara, a floating wind and subsea engineering firm, on the sale of the business to Inverness-headquartered Aurora Energy Services.

Encomara will maintain its brand and product identity while gaining access to Aurora’s global infrastructure and client network, with the consultancy business, which offers specialist advice on floating wind, mooring systems and subsea field development, continuing to operate as normal and benefitting from Aurora’s greater scale, resource and reach.

As part of the deal, Aurora is also committed to investing in Encomara’s SQUID system, a new offshore floating wind technology which reduces the cost, time and risk associated with the deployment, recovery and reconnection of turbines.

Burges Salmon’s Edinburgh-based Corporate and M&A team advised on the sale, led by partner Malcolm Donald, senior associate Scott Fyfe and solicitor Jenny Purcell. Malcolm comments: “We’re proud to have advised on this significant transaction in the local market with a deal that strengthens Encomara’s position in the offshore floating wind market but which also aligns with Aurora’s vision for innovation and expansion. Our expertise in Corporate M&A energy transactions allowed us to provide tailored solutions to facilitate a successful sale.”

Ian Donald of Encomara, adds: “Aurora’s ambition and capability give Encomara the ideal platform to accelerate our roadmap and bring the SQUID system to more markets, more quickly. Together, we can industrialise floating wind deployment, while staying focused on innovation, safety, and engineering quality. Burges Salmon was excellent throughout the process, with an understanding of our sector and of our business that ensured the transaction was executed smoothly and aligned with our strategic goals.”

Combining sector knowledge with corporate and M&A expertise, Burges Salmon provides tailored advice to support clients on complex transactions in the UK and internationally. The firm’s energy capabilities were recognised in Clean Energy Pipeline’s 2025 Legal League Tables with Burges Salmon ranked as the second most active law firm in clean energy M&A deals, in the top 10 Project Finance table and fifth in this year’s inaugural Influence Factor rankings.
