Burges Salmon advises Kent County Council on acquisition of solar park from Ethical Power

Posted: 12th April 2022

The firm has advised Kent County Council on the significant acquisition of a solar project

Burges Salmon’s Net Zero Services team has advised Kent County Council, via its wholly owned subsidiary Commercial Services Group (CSG), on the acquisition of the entire issued share capital of Bowerhouse II Solar Limited from Hive Ethical Solar Portfolio 1 Limited.

CSG is one of the largest, local authority owned, trading organisations of its kind in the UK. Since its inception over 70 years ago as the supplies division of Kent County Council, it has grown organically to become one of the leading suppliers of products and services to the public sector.

Ethical Power is an experienced international developer and operator of solar photovoltaic projects, creating transformational change for a cleaner future by delivering world-class solar projects and smart solutions across the circular economy.

This acquisition by CSG is an exciting milestone for the trading organisation and Kent County Council in the drive to decarbonise. The UK has set a legally binding target of achieving zero net carbon by 2050 creating an urgent need for more renewable energy generation. Globally, solar power is expected to produce around 22% of global electricity by 2050.

The Burges Salmon team advising on the deal was led by senior associate Danny Perera, along with renewable energy partners Ross Fairley and Camilla Usher-Clark.

Danny Perera comments: “The acquisition of this solar project by Kent County Council, via CSG, is an exciting milestone for it in its drive for Net Zero – we are delighted to have been a part of that by offering our legal expertise across a multi-disciplinary team.”

Kane Stockwell, Net Zero Energy Supply Lead at Laser Energy, says: “We are delighted to see the acquisition of this solar project completed and a significant step taken towards Kent County Council’s Net Zero ambition. We would like to thank the team at Burges Salmon; they filled us with confidence with their expertise and handling of the process – and they delivered the project in a professional and timely manner.”
