Burges Salmon acts for Blackfinch Energy on Scottish wind farm acquisition set to power 5,500 homes annually

Posted: 17th June 2025

Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon has advised Blackfinch Energy, part of Blackfinch Group, on its acquisition of Muirhall Wind Farm Extension, the high performing wind project based in South Central Scotland. The site, just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh, is surrounded by several other turbines and stands out for its impressive scale and production capacity.

With blade tip heights reaching 147 meters, Muirhall Wind Farm Extension has some of the largest turbines in the Blackfinch portfolio and is one of Blackfinch Energy’s most significant assets for annual energy generation, with the capacity to produce approximately 19GWh annually, the equivalent of providing renewable energy to around 5,500 homes each year.

Burges Salmon’s Edinburgh-based Corporate Energy team advised Blackfinch Energy, led by partner Danny Lee, senior associate Niall Mackle and solicitor Jenny Purcell.

Danny Lee comments: “Blackfinch Energy boasts an impressive portfolio of over 70 wind and solar sites across the UK, and it has been a pleasure working with the Blackfinch team as it continues to diversify its Scottish-based assets with an acquisition that plays an important role in renewable energy generation and makes impactful contributions to the local community. Our extensive experience in handling acquisitions and divestments in the energy sector, both in Scotland and across the UK, allowed us to ensure a seamless completion within demanding timescales.”

Alan Gorman, Investment Director at Blackfinch Energy, adds: “The Muirhall Wind Farm Extension represents an ideal investment – an established renewable asset with a proven track record. This acquisition further strengthens our renewable energy portfolio, offering stability and consistent returns for our investors. We enjoyed working with Burges Salmon with Danny, Niall and Jenny providing excellent support throughout the acquisition process.”

Combining sector knowledge with corporate and M&A expertise, Burges Salmon provides tailored advice to support clients on complex transactions in the UK and internationally. The firm’s energy capabilities were recognised in Clean Energy Pipeline’s 2025 Legal League Tables with Burges Salmon ranked as the second most active law firm in clean energy M&A deals, in the top 10 Project Finance table and fifth in this year’s inaugural Influence Factor rankings.
