Appeal for businesses in Edinburgh to follow government guidance

Posted: 6th April 2020
Legislation passed by the Scottish Government is now in place to allow our regulatory team along with Police Scotland to make sure that businesses in the city are correctly adhering to government guidance as the coronavirus pandemic continues in Edinburgh.
These emergency responsibilities allow both council and police officers to make sure that all non-essential businesses are closed, and those businesses that are required to remain open, adhere to the social distancing and safe queuing guidance as well as other restrictions which have been put in place.

If you are a member of the public and would like to report businesses who continue to operate in contravention of the legislation, or if you are a business who requires advice as to your trading operations email Trading.Standards@edinburgh.gov.uk

Adam McVey, Council Leader, said:

This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone and we’re doing everything we possibly can to support businesses to help them through this as best we can.

I really appreciate how hard it is for businesses that are closed, and in some cases operating very differently. I know that the vast majority of individuals and organisations are following guidance and I would appeal to everyone in the city including the business community to carry on doing this to support the NHS and other key workers to help us to stop the spread of the virus.

Cammy Day, Depute Leader, said:

This a very tough time for everyone, and I know many businesses will be starting to struggle financially. We’re offering support such as the small business support grants of £10,000 where we can and I’d encourage everyone to study all the help which has been announced at government and at local level to make sure your business gets the help being offered.
