Working with the Community

Edinburgh's economy is thriving but there are communities in the city with higher than average levels of unemployment, and where school leavers face an uncertain future.

We believe the business community has a role to play in improving opportunities for these communities, and participate in several development initiatives.

The Craigmillar Business Incubator Project

Based in the Castlebrae Business Centre, the Craigmillar Business Incubator Project offers an informal walk-in support service for all local residents and businesses. The project provides opportunities for residents wishing to realise their entrepreneurial ambitions, and encourages self-employment as a realistic option. Support, advice, upskilling and encouragement are all available through the project.

The North Edinburgh Business Incubator

The North Edinburgh Business Incubator (NEBI) encourages entrepreneurial activity and business start-ups within the North Edinburgh Social Inclusion Partnership area.

The Edinburgh Ethnic Enterprise Initiative

The Edinburgh Chamber manages the Edinburgh Ethnic Enterprise Initiative, which helps bridge the gap for an inclusive business community by helping ethnic businesses get the advice, support, guidance and training that best suits their needs.

Embracing Diversity - Do you struggle to fill your vacancies?

Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce is working with Maree Drury of Scottish Business in the Community on an "Embracing Diversity" project. The aim of this project is to prepare a web based toolkit for practitioners working with the long-term unemployed. It is anticipated that they will use this resource when working with and supporting SME's to recruit and retain individuals who have not been working for some time.

In order to develop this resource appropriately, it is vital that we have an understanding of the support you as an employer would require around this issue.

We are hoping to put together a small focus group of between 6-10 small business managers to be held during July in Edinburgh. It will take no more than one and a half hours.

This is an important piece of work that should ensure that small businesses get the best support and information available to help them benefit from the skills and commitment of new kinds of recruits.

If you would like more information please call Maree Drury 0131 451 1100
