The latest Chamber news and business updates from around Edinburgh and Scotland

Date: 30 June 2008

tie Limited has announced the implementation of a temporary one way system for Leith Walk.

For a period of two weeks from 30th June 2008, they will be installing utility diversions across Leith Walk between Dalmeny Street and Manderston Street junctions.

In order to facilitate this work they will be introducing a one way traffic system that only allows southbound (city centre) traffic along the section of Leith Walk between Dalmeny Street and Manderston Street. Northbound traffic will be diverted via Dalmeny Street, Easter Road, Gordon Street and Manderston Street.

Residents and businesses in the one way sections will have parking and loading provisions maintained and there will be no change to the pedestrian arrangements.

In a phase of concurrent work, the junction at Jane Street will be closed for one week starting Monday 30th June also.

As in other sections of work, important temporary traffic management solutions have been carefully developed so as to ensure the free flow of traffic through the different phases.

Willie Gallagher, Executive Chairman of tie Limited, said: "This work was always going to have to be done. The team have developed a programme that will ensure swift completion and keep disruption to a minimum.

"Leith Walk is central to the Edinburgh Tram Project and we are mindful of its importance to the City. The work will take place during the Edinburgh Trade holidays when there will be lower traffic levels. This will allow us to work quickly and effectively.

"As with our other work sites along the tram route, we will ensure that any impact associated with these works is lessened by good planning and robust traffic management - all carried out in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council, Lothian Buses and the emergency services. As in these other locations, we will provide for the optimum flow of traffic for both public and private.

"We recognise that Edinburgh wants this work done quickly and safely.  Our proposed methodology, alongside the traffic management measures, is the best way to achieve this."
