Shepherd and Wedderburn hosts A4ID Law & Development Training Programme

Posted: 31st August 2016

Leading UK law firm, Shepherd and Wedderburn is supporting Advocates for International Development (A4ID) in delivering their Law & Development Training Programme to legal professionals in Scotland.  A4ID is a global charity, which works to connect its network of more than 53,000 lawyers with international development organisations in need of pro bono legal advice. The two-day law and development course, which takes place on Friday 23 September and Friday 21 October will be hosted by Shepherd and Wedderburn at its Edinburgh office.

The programme is aimed at practising lawyers and other legal professionals to increase their level of awareness and insight into the increasingly important fields of business & human rights and development. It is designed to equip lawyers with an in-depth understanding of how major issues on the development agenda relate to their everyday work and their clients’ businesses.

The course will explore role of the law in:

  • Introduction to Law & Development
  • Finance and Development
  • Business and Human Rights
  • Sustainable Development

Across these four modules the panel of specialist trainers, which includes experts from the Scottish Government’s International Development Division, the International Institute for Environment and Development, the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Aberdeen University, will address a wide range of subjects, ranging from financing international development projects, to debt and corruption, as well as human rights implications for businesses.

The panel will also include Shepherd and Wedderburn partner, Judy Krieg, a highly experienced financial crime, compliance, governance and financial regulatory lawyer, who will be joined by senior associate, Fiona Parker, a regulatory specialist, with a focus on economic regulation and competition law. Judy, who will be teaching a module on corruption, commented: “A4ID’s course has already achieved great success in London, with excellent reviews from legal practitioners in private and in-house practices. We are looking forward to being part of replicating this success in Scotland and providing Scottish lawyers with insight into the legal aspects of development work.”

Further information about the course, fees and registration details can be found on the A4ID website.
