Commonly Used International Trade Documents: Standard Shipping Note

When export cargo is delivered to the reception point, where it is to enter the transport mode by which goods will be conveyed to the intended final destination, it is customary that the exporter provides documentation indicating the description and characteristics of the cargo delivered.

A completed Standard Shipping Note is a readily identifiable document which the reception point and transport company will accept as being reflective of the exact nature of the goods covered by the document, unless such parties chose to dispute any of its content.

The reception point, often acting on behalf of the Transport company will handle the goods in accordance with information details contained in the Standard Shipping Note.

If as a result of incorrect disclosure or non disclosure of information, the exporter will be held liable to any consequences which arise as a consequence of such incorrect or non disclosure. Goods of a Dangerous Nature have are to be covered by a Dangerous Goods Note, which its own disciplines as regards document content. Completion of the Standard Shipping Note is therefore vital in assisting the smooth transportation of the goods to their final destination.
