Commonly Used International Trade Documents: Export Cargo Shipping Instruction

To discharge the obligations necessary to bring an international trade transaction to a successful conclusion, it is often necessary to use the third parties such as transport companies to engage in certain activities related to the transaction.

In order that any such party is able to be complete on the transportation activity in accordance with the contract between the seller and the buyer, it is necessary that they have clear and unambiguous instructions relative to the transportation element of the contract.

The Export Cargo Shipping Instruction is intended to facilitate the means by which instructions can be given thereby helping remove any uncertainties which may otherwise arise.

The fundamental role of the document is to provide the transport company with absolute accurate details of the transaction, and instruct the transport company as to what is required of them , to enable the seller exporter to fulfil his obligations to the Buyer.

Since the Transport Company will act in accordance with the instructions detailed in the document, it follows that exporters should be fully aware and have a clear understanding as to what they are actually instructing that the Transport Company do with regard to the physical movement of the goods, completion and disposal of documents and apportionment of costs.
