The Air Waybill is the main document used in air transportation and has three basic functions:
- Evidence of a Contract of Carriage by air.
- A receipt for details detailed on the document.
- Detailed identification of the goods covered by the Contract of Carriage.
The Air Waybill usually comes in three originals., with one original held by the carrier, a second accompanying the goods, and the third by the shipper.
Although the Air Waybill may indicate the name of the consignee. As the supplier reserves the right to change the delivery instructions which goods are in transit, it follows that the shipper may instruct the carrier to deliver goods to another party.
The consignee may avoid this eventuality by requesting the inclusion of a 'non-disposal clause'.
